When it was forbidden for common people to carry weapons of any kind and it came to self-defence, the medieval residents of Okinawa had to get creative. Kobudo, a form of “weaponized Karate”, is notable for its unusual array of techniques utilizing traditional farming implements and tools, like the tonfa, originally the handle of a millstone, the kama sickle, or the two-pronged sai pitchfork. Delve deeper into the rich history of Japanese martial arts in this fascinating workshop.
