During the Pacific War, the ‘Eigaho’ (Film Law) of 1939 was passed, giving the Japanese government control over the national film industry - only so-called ‘National Policy’ films were allowed to be made. Several recent big budget movies about the war have been hits, but prompt questions about the ideological message and the (overt or hidden) motives of the financers arose. This discussion will focus on issues of censorship now and then, and on the role and impact of war propaganda. Luk van Haute will talk with Dr. Alexander Zahlten (Harvard University), Yoju MATSUBAYASHI (director THE HORSES OF FUKUSHIMA) and Junichi INOUE (director A WOMAN AND WAR).
