Like no other genre, the melodrama is the quintessence of a cinema of affections, in which suffering from love constitutes the narrative core and in which the filmic mis-en-scène is directly aimed at setting free the emotions both of the characters as well as of the spectators. Film scholar Sebastian Lauritz (University of Mainz) will sketch the emergence and development of this genre within the context of Japanese film history. He will take a look at film classics from the 1930s as well as productions from the postmodern era.
